OCI integration: what is it and what restrictions are there?

Written by Steven Veenstra

What is OCI?

OCI is short for 'Open Catalog Interface'. This is a standard for placing a purchase order within an ERP system, using a webshop as a catalogue.

An OCI connection is established by the software developer. A connection is made between the procurement system and the catalogue. This connection ensures that when an order is placed within the webshop environment, the order is forwarded to the procurement system. The procurement system handles the order processing.

Error messages and restrictions

Because of the standards OCI supports, a number of error messages may occur. This is due to the restrictions imposed. Below we've made a list per error message or restriction.

The OCI connection cannot be established.

This is one of the best-known messages within PremiumID. The cause of this message is session time. Session time is the time you get to complete your order. A session starts as soon as you press the function that takes you from the procurement system to the webshop environment (in the case of PremiumID, this is the 'Naar de Brandportal' (To the brand portal) button). Once a session has expired, you can no longer order and a new connection must be established.

Starting a new connection

You can establish a new connection within PremiumID by clicking "Naar de Brandportal" (To the brand portal) again. You'll return to the webshop environment with a new session.

The time you get within one session is 30 minutes. This time has been set for security reasons. This way, outsiders who shouldn't have access to the platform can't just place orders. Another common example is being automatically logged out of webshops after a certain amount of time.

The product name is cut off in the procurement system

It can happen that when you order within the webshop environment, the item name in the procurement system doesn't match but is cut off.

For example

Webshop item name: Notebook made from Stonewaste-Bamboo A6 notitieboek

Procurement system item name: Notebook made from Stonewaste-Bamboo A6

OCI is limited to forwarding a maximum of 40 characters for certain fields. This limitation applies to the product name. This means that if a product name is longer than 40 characters, all characters after the 40th are removed.
